CHAPTER 1

veryone says Grade 8 is supposed to be your year. For Charlie
Davins, it’s a mix of excitement and nerves. It’s not a new
school, thankfully, but the class won’t be the same. Some old
classmates might be there, but with new people coming in, fitting in
feels like a big question mark.
Anyway, I was in my room, lying back on my bed, staring at the
ceiling, chewing on the end of my pencil. My notebook was open
beside me, half filled with random to-do lists, crossed-out ideas, and a
heading that read:
“Grade 8 Plan” (with three question marks).
“S.M.,” I said.
S.M. is just short for “school makeover.” It involves doing new
things and getting ready for a new year at school. But it’s really hard to
make one—especially when you don’t have someone to do it with you.
“That’s it!” Then I realized I could call my friends to help me with
it. I grabbed my phone and tapped Madelyn’s name. She’s my first-
ever best friend—who has the same birthday and last name initial. The
phone rang twice.
“Heyyy,” she answered, dragging out the y like she always did
when she was bored.
“Hey,” I said, already feeling calmer. “What are you doing?”
