BETWEEN THE LANES

“Well, my family and I have been having serious problems, and
when they found out I was pregnant with you, they didn’t allow me to

take care of you well. That’s why you’ve never seen me since birth,”

she said, trying to make me understand.
But I didn’t say anything, mostly because I was confused.

“And I’m sorry,” she said, looking dejected. “I’m sorry I’ve
ignored you since. Your dad didn’t want any issues with you and me if

          we met.”
“Wait, so you guys are not divorced or anything?” I asked.

“No, we used to talk when you were younger, but then we stopped

and lost touch. We didn’t want our problems to interfere with your life
as you grew up,” Dad uttered.

He then came closer to me, holding my palm. “I wanted to take
care of you fully, so I put your mom aside. And I promise you, we

understand whatever good or bad feelings you have about this.”
What I felt was like crying a little bit. I was the only person in my

family—whether my mom’s or not—who had never been raised by a

mother. I was kind of glad my mother was finally home, though. It may
sound weird, but some kids would still disagree and not accept their

“back home parent.” But not me—I always give people second

          chances.
And it wasn’t like my parents were divorced; they just had to take

a break for a bit, since my mother had some serious problems to solve
with her family. And my dad wanted what’s best for me—to care for

me. Honestly, I kinda understood the disruption.
