BETWEEN THE LANES
“Hi,” he smiled.
“If I may ask, why are you walking with me?” I uttered.
“My mom got a full shift at her workplace, so nowadays I have to
walk home.”
“What about your da—never mind… sorry.”
“Oh, it’s okay. But my dad lives really far from my house, that’s
why I usually just visit on weekends.”
I just nodded and said nothing. It went quiet after that, but I didn’t
really like the silence, so I asked the stupidest, weirdest question—the
kind I knew he’d probably say no to.
“Um… do you want to go to a coffee shop tomorrow to do the rest
of the project?”
He sighed and chuckled oddly, and I braced myself for a “no.”
“Sure. But we have a whole ten pages left to do, so I don’t think
we’ll finish tomorrow.”
“Oh, it’s okay. Mrs. Jean said we have two more days before it’s
due.”
“Great. So, I’ll give you my number, and I’ll text you when I’m
going to the shop.”
“Alright.”
We shared our phone numbers, said goodbye, and went home.
It felt like my first time giving a boy my number to text or call—
apart from the Gameboy in MS Car Racing Gaming. But I’ll admit, I
blushed really hard this time.
