THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL
“So, since you came to this school, I’ve realized how cool and nice
you are—funny, especially. And—for some reason… I’ve started
having—”
But right before I could finish my sentence, I got a call from my
dad. I didn’t really want to answer, but then I got texts from him saying,
‘Elle, come home right now! I have big news to tell you.’
Travis, who was hoping to hear my news with seriousness, asked,
“What is it?”
I texted Dad that I’d be back home quickly, but that meant I
couldn’t tell Travis about my feelings. I packed my things and said
goodbye to him. He waved back but looked confused—and I felt really
bad.
Back at home, I opened the door to see a strange woman inside.
She was chatting with my dad, and when they saw me, they looked
surprised.
“What’s going on?” I asked slowly, putting my things down on the
floor.
“Uh…” Dad started. “Elle, meet Vanisha… your, your—”
“My what?” I got closer to them.
“Your mother.”
Everything went quiet. I didn’t know what to say. My mother? The
woman whom I’ve never seen in my whole life, even since I was born?
How is that possible? And after all these years—now she’s back?
“What—where have you been all this time?” I asked, shocked,
looking at my mother.
