SO… THAT WAS FRIENDSHIP?
“Lying on my couch. Half-watching a show I’ve already seen.
Why?”
I sat up. “Okay, don’t get annoyed… but I need your help.”
“With what?”
“Planning. Like, getting everything together before school starts.
The S.M. For us. Like last year—just... not a disaster this time.”
There was a pause. I could hear her shifting, probably grabbing a
bag of chips or something.
“You called me... for life planning?”
“Yes,” I said. “School starts next week, and I feel like I’m walking
into a war zone without armor.”
She snorted. “You’re so dramatic.”
“Not dramatic. Realistic. We need outfit opinions. Hair advice. A
full-on rebuild.”
“Wow. Okay,” she said, fake-serious. “So we’re scrapping the old
Charlie and building a better one?”
“Not just me—all of us. The three of us. If we’re doing Grade 8,
we’re doing it right this time.”
“Well... I still think last year worked,” she said. “You just need to
try again. Maybe this time you’ll succeed.”
“What does this have to do with success?” I groaned. “Madi, come
on. Please. Can we just make a real plan this time?”
She was quiet for a second. “Fine. But next year—no S.M.”
“Yes! Okay, please call Elisha when you’re coming.”
“Bye,” she said with a grumpy attitude.
