UNDERNEATH IT ALL

Then, he stepped in closer. Like, way too close. I didn’t want to
give him the satisfaction, but his breath actually smelled… nice? Like

cinnamon or something warm. For whatever reason, I leaned in a little

          too.
               Big mistake.

Suddenly, cold, sticky slime landed on my head. It reeked. I froze.
Caleb burst out laughing along with his friends.

And yeah—I almost cried partly because the smell was unbearable.
But mostly? For a second, I genuinely thought he was about to hug me

          or something.

Caleb didn’t say anything and just went back to his friends. I
expected Mr. Clark to see the drama that just happened and send Caleb

to the principal or something—but he didn’t. He didn’t even look in our
direction. He avoided our faces and turned back to his desk.

I got up and headed to the door, but while I was walking out, Mr.
Clark (finally) looked up and saw me.

“Whoa… you look and smell bad.”

               Wow. Thanks for the compliment.
“Excuse yourself to the bathroom, Jorelle.”

Everyone turned to look at me, stunned. It was so embarrassing

that I ran out of the class quickly and went straight to the bathroom.
