s soon as school ended, Martin and Dietra were waiting for
me by a random classroom door in the hallway. I walked up
to them with a muddled expression.
“What’s going on now?”
Dietra had this bright look on her face, which made me even more
confused—but also a bit excited.
“Shauna… I know you’ll probably not agree with this, but the
comedy club just started today, and I was hoping you’d join now!”
“Me?” I pointed to myself.
“Yeah! We told them how funny and great you are at comedy and
thought you could join the club. There, you could learn more jokes and
stuff, you know.”
“But I told you, my parents wouldn’t—”
“We know, we know,” Martin cut in. “They’d disagree. But this is
once in a lifetime. I’m not sure you’ll ever get this opportunity again.
Forget about your parents for now; eventually, we’ll tell them.”
For some reason, I had a genuine smile on my face. “Alright, I’ll
join. But just because you guys said so.”
Martin nodded, and Dietra opened the door for me to enter.
As I walked in, a sudden rush ran through me—a shiver that left
goosebumps on my arms—and all I wanted was to get out. Everyone’s
eyes turned toward me as the teacher welcomed me in. I slipped into a
