SHAUNA’S STAND–UP

“Where have you been?” Mom asked, finishing her work on the
          computer.

“Um, at school? Like always.” Don’t ask why I was even trying to

          be smart.
“School? School ends at 3:00. You’re coming home at 3:25—and

even your brother came earlier.” She glanced at her small brown Rolex
          watch.

“Well, there was a school meeting, and we had to stay for an extra
          twenty-five minutes.”

“And what was the meeting about?” Mom got up from the

          computer table.
“Um… about student behavior?” I shrugged nervously, hoping she

          wouldn’t find anything suspicious.
“Oh, behavior? Well, your behavior right now isn’t helping the fact

that you’re lying!” She put her hands on her hips, waiting for me to
answer. At that point, I just had to tell the truth.

“Okay, okay, fine. I’ll tell the truth,” I sighed, sitting down at the

          dining table.
               “Well?” Mom pressed.

“Today, my friends told me about new clubs that are coming to the

school. Well, they’re actually activities we can join. So, after school
today, my friends convinced me to join… the comedy club.”

               Mom’s face froze in shock.
