SHAUNA’S STAND–UP

“The school has finally announced that they’re bringing clubs!”
          Dietra said.

               “Yeah, I know,” I nodded.

“Well, did you know they’re bringing clubs like a comedy club?”
I raised both my eyebrows in shock. “Uh, no—wait, are they

          really?”
               “Yeah!”

“And you could join—especially since you’re such a funny girl,”
          Martin said with a smile.

               I stammered in hesitation.

“Oh, c’mon! Don’t say no, you have to join! You could learn great
jokes and make your comedian life better!” Dietra exclaimed.

               “I–I don’t know… If it’s an after-school club, I can’t join because
my mom will want me home before 3:30, and I know my parents

          wouldn’t agree anyway.” I frowned.
Martin sighed in disbelief while Dietra tried to back me up.

“Don’t worry,” she said, touching my shoulder. “It’ll be fine. I

know you want to join, and if we have to confront and try to convince
your parents to agree, we will.”

I smiled and said, “Thanks, Dietra.”

But I know my parents—there’s nothing anyone can do to make
          them change their minds…
