THAT WASN’T THE PLAN
Jayson didn’t seem to agree. He thought the idea was pointless—
and maybe even feared that Chris might take me away from him.
And Chris… I know I’ve said it before, but I could tell he was
upset. Maybe it was the way I kept revolving around Jayson at school,
when all he wanted was to talk about us.
“I just want to be friends with you both, for now,” I said, changing
the topic. “And until I get what I want, can the status quo remain?”
Chris turned to Jayson, and Jayson looked at him too. Then they
both faced me.
“Kandis, whether we’re friends or not, I just don’t want you out of
my life.” Chris showed me his soft, meaningful smile.
I was pleased by that—finally, someone could agree with this plan.
“Thanks, Chris. We can be just… good friends.”
But now it was Jayson’s turn. What was he going to say? Would
he agree? Deny it? Or stay angry at me?
I was really worried and scared. I didn’t want my best friend away
from my life. But now that I’d decided to befriend both of them
officially, he couldn’t say no.
“Well? What’s your decision, Jayson?” I asked, lowering my
voice.
He still didn’t say anything, and I didn’t know what to do.
“Please, you can’t just turn me away like that. I love you—since I
was five—and I know you do too. We’ve been friends since I learned
how to say words. And I’m sorry I tried to take you away by adding
