our sins; He was bruised for all of our wicked ways. He was punished
so that we could have peace—and it is by His stripes that we are healed.
In The Passion Translation, His name is likened to “flowing oil,” of
which there is a never-ending supply. In other words, no matter where
you are, what you are doing, or what your situation demands, the
flowing oil of Jesus is readily available.
Go to the beginning of verse 3 again and notice how, in the New King
James Version, it says: “Because of the fragrance of your good
ointments”—which is in the plural. This is because the name and
person of Jesus are multifaceted. He has to be in order to fulfill what
His name means, which is “God is my Saviour.” Everything needed for
the fullness of well-being—for our bodies, souls, and spirits—is found
only in the person and name of Jesus Christ.
As I was meditating on this verse, I was struck by how much it cost
Jesus to become that pleasing fragrance—the ointment, the ever-
flowing oil. It only came forth because of His willingness to suffer on
our behalf out of love. We, too, are called to join in the fellowship of
His suffering. The Bible says that it has been granted to us to suffer:
“For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe
in Him, but also to suffer for Him...” (Philippians 1:29, NIV)
We are also called to exude a pleasing fragrance to others:
