Aerial Appliance Operator Lesson Plan

Allow each student time to familiarise themselves with the cab layout
and controls.

Appliance familiarisation

Take students to the appliance.

Cover the following:

• all external lights, switches etc, explaining their functions

• pump characteristics and pump panel components

• lockers

• foam tank location

• 240 v inlet and outlet

• locker fuse and circuit breaker location

• hydraulic fluid reservoir

• major components of the aerial ladder (from the transport position)

• location of all safety and operation instructions and labels

• location and operation of any manual safety brake switches.

• location of fall restraint harness, sling and anchor locations, include
loading considerations

• location of intercom communication system

• location and operation of other systems such as bulk air.

Allow each student time to familiarise themselves with the appliance
layout and controls.

TOPIC CONCLUSION

Help students recap main points.
Give students an opportunity to ask questions.
