Chapter 8
The United States Government has the worst kept secrets in
the world. Everyone knows that there are a host of secret
laboratories buried in Virginia that are pretending to be
capitalist ventures or university financed research facilities.
Tommy Woodhead, a chubby red-headed nobody works at just
such a facility. One day he was thinking about how unfair it
was that Richard Fogg, who had been a career nobody of even
less distinction than himself, was mysteriously promoted, for no
apparent reason, to supervisor for one whole wing. It certainly
wasn’t because of his work performance; he was a lazy,
conceited worker, so there must be some other reason why he
had been vaulted over those who were more suited to the
position. He was the odd man who did not drink beer,
preferring schnapps and apple martinis, if he drank at all.
Tommy had come to Richard’s office to complain to him about
funding cuts. Finding the office empty, Tommy found it
irresistible to be snooping about to determine the reason for
the sudden promotion. After a cursory glance, there were no
clues. It was the typical office of a typical bureaucrat. There
were knickknacks bought that were solely intended to impress
anyone who entered the office. There was a multiple canvas
mural, a fake potted tree, a bookcase with a number of
scientific reference materials to clean and neat to have ever
