•  Achieving strict diabetic control by:

                          o  Self-glucose monitoring.

                          o  Nutritional adjustment.

                          o  Insulin manipulation.


                   Provide genetic counseling.



                   During Antenatal Period



                   Goals of Nursing Care


                       •  To maintain a physiologic equilibrium of insulin availability  and

                          glucose utilization during pregnancy.

                       •  To deliver an optimally healthy mother and newborn.



                   Assessment


                   Nursing history:



                       •  Previous history of gestational DM.

                       •  History of pre-eclampsia.

                       •  Previous infant, >4000gm.

                       •  Family history of DM.

                   Physical examination:


                       •  Frequent urination beyond first trimester and prior to third.


                       •  Presence of monilial vaginitis.

                       •  Fundal height greater than expected.


                   Laboratory evaluation:



                       •  Elevated fasting plasma glucose.

                       •  Elevated 3-hour glucose tolerance test.
