Hospitalization:
• From 32 week till delivery for patient with vascular changes.
Management of Pre-gestational Diabetes Mellitus
During Pregnancy
• Diet: As mentioned in gestational diabetes mellitus.
• Medication:
o Insulin is prescribed for all insulin-dependent diabetics.
o Non-insulin dependent diabetics may require insulin during periods
of stress e.g. infection of pregnancy.
• Insulin is measured in units. Each patient’s regimen is determined
in relation to a particular schedule and diet plan throughout a 24 hr.
period.
• Injections into one side or area of tissue may result in hypertrophy
of tissue and eventual fibrosis.
Activity:
The goals of activity are:
• Promote metabolic control.
• Reduce the risk for cardiovascular & peripheral vascular
complications
• Assist in weight control.
• Physical activity promotes health &should be encouraged in
moderation and at a consistent level.
• The diabetic person should also carry sugar cubes or sweets that can
be taken at first signs of hypoglycemia.
