o Any procedure.
• Continuous monitoring of maternal and fetal well being by using
electronic fetal monitoring.
• Monitoring blood glucose level every one or two hours.
• Administer glucose solutions and subcutaneous or intravenous
insulin as ordered.
• Assist with oxytocin induction of labor as required.
• Be prepared for emergency cesarean section and neonatal
resuscitation.
During Postpartum
• Continue frequent monitoring of blood glucose after delivery since
levels may swing markedly.
• Administer glucose solutions and insulin as order.
• Encourage breastfeeding.
• Educate patient regarding contraception.
• Teach GDM women to be tested for DM at 4-6 week post-partum
and periodically.
• Encourage GDM women to maintain optimum weight to prevent
or postpone the onset of DM
Evaluative Outcome Criteria
• The successful delivery of a healthy infant.
• The woman feels comfortable with caring for the newborn infant.
• The patient demonstrates her understanding of teaching by
modifying her diet and activity and by frequent monitoring of blood
glucose levels after delivery.
