                   Skin integrity:

Diabetes increases the individual’s risk for infection and skin breakdown.

                   The person is taught to:

                   • Keep the skin clean, warm and free of irritation and pressure.

                   • Prevent cracks and breaks in the skin.

                   • Clean the abrasions and protect with a dressing.

                   Foot Care:

Adult diabetic feet require special attention because of increased

susceptibility to circulatory disorders and loss of sensation.

                   The patient is directed to:

                       • Wash the feet daily with warm water.

                       • Use a mild antibacterial soap and a small amount of bath oil.

                       • Dry them thoroughly, especially the area between the toes.

                   Assessment of glycemic control:

Assessment of metabolic control of glucose can be achieved by the person

on a continuous or intermittent basis by:

                       • Monitoring of blood glucose level.
