P. 49
Commentary
As said, thanksgiving and worshipping cannot be separated from
each other, yet it is something different. We could say,
thanksgiving is to acknowledge God for what He gives us, while
worshipping is the acknowledgment of God for who He is and what
He does in His love and mercy and power.
Worship is man’s answer to God’s revelation of Himself in His Word.
The more we get to know God from His Word, the more we will
stand in awe over His greatness, His might, His mercy, love, power,
and glory, and the more we will be drawn to worship God more and
fully. Prayers without worshipping God often show a lack of
knowledge of God.
This is what someone (W. Becker) once said about worshipping God in
prayer: It is less a matter of well-chosen words, but the coming and
living under a deep impression of the reality of who God is, His being,
and of His wonderful works.
Application
a. In the light of what was said, what should be the relationship
between the reading of God’s Word and prayer when we have
quiet time, or Bible Study time or private worship, doesn’t
matter what you call it?
b. Looking at your prayers, do you worship God for who He is and
what He has done? Why is that and how could you improve this
important part of your prayers?
c. When evaluating your prayers, would you describe yourself as
a thankful person?
The variety and fullness of our prayers
Look at the following schematic drawing about prayer.
Make sure you understand the drawing.
