Abstract Feeling drowsiness while driving can lead to fatal accidents, which may result in
casualties, physical injuries, and property damage. Usually, the occurrence of drowsiness
happens when the driver feels abnormally sleepy or tired during the day. For the worse case, it
can lead to microsleep conditions that can be risky to the driver as the brain is asleep, but the
eyes, hands, and feet are still active. To prevent this mishap condition, the drowsiness state of
the driver should be monitored gradually. Hence, this paper discusses the analysis of the
drowsiness behavior of the driver during driving conditions using a vision sensor. The
condition of the driver is detected by using the cascade object detector, Region of Interest (ROI)
to locate the position of the eyes, and template matching. The use of ROI is to extract the
specific region of the eyes during certain conditions, either it is drooping or open. The analysis
is measured from the data by using MATLAB. The image processing of this system is
conducted by process the collected images of the driver from driving simulation.
