Effectively Prepare for Tests
Take a careful look at your performance on and preparation for a test you took recently.
Build basic skills. Think about how you did on the test. Were you pleased or disappointed
with your performance and grade? Explain your answer.
List any of the problems below that you feel you experienced in this exam. If you experi-
enced one or more problems not listed here, include them in your document. For each problem
you identified, think about why you made mistakes.
■ Incomplete preparation
■ Fatigue
■ Feeling rushed during the test
■ Shaky understanding of concepts
■ Poor guessing techniques
■ Feeling confused about directions
■ Test anxiety
■ Poor essay organization or writing
Take it to the next level. Be creative about test-preparation strategies. If you had all the
time and materials you needed, how would you have prepared for this test? Describe briefly
what your plan would be and how it would address your problem(s).
Now think back to your actual test preparation—the techniques you used and amount of Test Taking
time you spent. Describe the difference between the ideal study plan you just described and
what you actually did.
Move toward mastery. Improve your chances for success on the next exam by coming
up with specific changes in your preparation.
