To enhance energy efficiency, the ESI team proposed increasing the Y/I ratio by addressing crop waste caused by excessive
sunlight exposure (Figure 2). Vegetation at the topmost section of the tower is particularly susceptible to UV light damage.
Analysis of collected data revealed that the average monthly vegetable total yield of 1,350 kg, approximately 269 kilograms
of vegetables suffered from excess sun exposure due to the inherent design of the vertical planting tower. The carbon
footprint per yield can be effectively minimised by reducing crop waste.
Figure 2: Crop waste caused by excessive sun exposure.
Annual CO2 emissions attributable to each resource utilised in the farming operation are shown in Table 1.
Table 1: Utility Consumption and the projected amount of annual CO2 emission.
Given that resources are allocated between the aquaculture and hydroponics systems, the associated CO2 emissions
associated with crop wastage were determined based on the total water and electricity usage, employing a 60:40 ratio.
Based on our calculations, the estimated CO2 emissions from crop wastage amount to approximately 1,485 kg annually.
