Conclusion
In conclusion, the environmental review of DM Engineering was driven by a dual purpose: meeting industry demands
and championing sustainability and efficiency. The ESI team devised innovative eco-solutions through collaboration and
creative problem-solving to enhance DM Engineering’s business operations. Significant energy efficiency and coolant usage
improvements were achieved by reducing the dependency on pumps for coolant flow and incorporating low-energy UV LED
light strips to eliminate bacteria growth. These benefits also significantly reduced the business’s carbon footprint.
The invaluable insights gained from the environmental review of DM Engineering provided a crucial understanding of the
operation of CNC milling machines. Despite encountering challenges, the team’s perseverance and problem-solving abilities
led to the development a prototype coolant system that yielded tangible results. The ESI team appreciates DM Engineering
for their unwavering support and collaboration throughout the project. We hope our endeavours will contribute to a more
sustainable future for the industry.
Students’ Reflections
Leading our environmental project, I initially recognised my limited understanding of our industry’s
requirements. However, our team embarked on a journey to innovate solutions to enhance
industry efficiency while prioritising environmental preservation. Our environmental review of DM
Engineering provided crucial insights into CNC milling operations, shaping our proposed concept.
We achieved multiple objectives by reducing the pumps required for coolant flow and integrating
low-energy UV LED lights to curb bacteria growth. Notably, our project reduced the carbon
footprint, conserved resources, and generated cost savings for the company. Looking ahead, we
aspire to extend our project’s impact to benefit other companies.
Jacob Seow
Participating in a project that reduced carbon footprints and electricity consumption was
challenging and rewarding. Overcoming obstacles, such as drastically cutting electricity usage,
was pivotal in my role. Our visit to DM Engineering provided invaluable insights into CNC milling
operations, particularly regarding coolant management. We implemented low-energy UV LED
strip lights to extend the coolant lifespan by addressing the frequent coolant replacements
due to bacterial growth. Despite challenges, our prototype coolant system successfully reduced
electricity consumption and maintenance costs, aligning with our project objectives and fostering
sustainability.
