TruCKer’s hITCh

In use long before there were trucks, this remains an
excellent hitch for cranking tight on a rope. The truck-
er’s hitch gives you a 3-to-1 mechanical advantage
like a primitive pulley, so it is excellent for tying canoes
onto the roof of a car and pitching large tarps. Note
that you should move the slip knots occasionally or
the rope-on-rope contact will wear through and break.

                                             1. start by tying a slip
                                             knot in the line, perhaps
4 or 5 feet from the end,
                                             depending on the cir-
                                             cumstances. The work-
                                             ing end is then passed
                                             around the anchor point
                                             and through the loop of
                                             the slip knot.
