5.2 Vehicle Lifting, Jacking and Support
Each Group Company must ensure they identify and document the required lifting points and positions for
support for all vehicle types in their fleet.
Each Group Company must ensure that the appropriate equipment is provided to lift vehicles and that all
required checks are undertaken. A policy must be in place to remove and quarantine any non-compliant
equipment.
6.0 Fitting Wheels to Vehicles
The fitting of wheels to vehicles is deemed as a ‘safety critical’ activity and each Group Company must
ensure they have a written policy that outlines the principles to be followed during wheel fitment, supported
by any guidance produced by the manufacturer. As a minimum this policy must incorporate the criteria set
for wheel and tyre inspection above, and for the following:
Tyre orientation / direction
Mating face cleanliness and condition (hub and wheel)
Stud and wheel nut condition and type
Spigot wear and condition (or any other mounting surface)
Lubrication of nut threads and collars
Re torque process (see section 6.1)
6.1 Wheel Nut Re Torque Process
Each Group Company must ensure they have a written policy that defines the process for initial torque,
subsequent re torque of wheel nuts and the documents on which these tasks are recorded.
As a minimum the policy must include the following:
1) Any manufacturer’s requirements for initial and follow up torque processes.
2) A settlement torque check after a minimum of 30 minutes or following a road test of 50 Kilometres /
30 Miles.
3) A final re torque after a period of running, usually carried out between 1-7 days.
This policy must also be applied in the event of an offsite replacement (such as a tyre change at the
roadside) as these events are usually carried out in less than optimal conditions. This is also expanded
upon in Section 8.0, Roadside Recovery.
The policy must dictate that any wheel nut indicators or retention devices must be removed to undertake
any torque processes.
