6.2 Calibration
Each Group Company must ensure they have a written policy that covers the periodic calibration of
equipment related to wheel fitment, for example, torque wrenches and pressure gauges.
The maximum interval permitted between calibrations of torque wrenches used for fitting of wheels shall be
no more than 6 months. The policy must explain the process that is to be followed when a torque wrench is
found to be out of calibration, as a minimum this must include quarantine of the defective equipment and
any re-checking requirements for vehicle wheel nuts.
7.0 Wheel Nut Retention and Indication Devices
Each Group Company may, should local conditions dictate, fit plastic wheel nut indicators or a spring based
wheel nut retaining device. Where these items are fitted, all related policies must clearly indicate when they
are to be fitted, replacement processes and policies for removal during re torque processes.
Wheel nuts using cams to lock during loosening are not to be used under any circumstances.
8.0 Road Side Recovery
Where tyres are replaced outside the control and influence of the Group Company, for example, as a result
of a rapid deflation, damage or puncture at the roadside, it is vitally important that they are assured that all
elements of the policies noted in this standard have been adhered to.
One method to assure this is to strip and check the assembly on return to depot (including reverse
torqueing of the wheel nuts to determine if they have been overtightened), however, the need to carry out re
torques on operations where vehicles do not return to their home depot should not be forgotten..
9.0 Disposal
Each Group Company must ensure they have a policy in place for the effective environmental disposal of
end of life tyre casings and wheel rims.
10.0 Monitoring and Audit
Each Group Company must ensure they undertake periodic audits to assess compliance to the policies
and procedures put in place to satisfy the requirements of this global standard.
Each Group Company will document this policy, including the frequency and content of any such audits and
the paperwork that audits are recorded on. This must include a clear process for addressing areas of non-
conformance and remedial action to be taken.
