2.0 Wheel and Tyre Storage
Each Group Company must have, in place, a policy to cover the storage of wheels and tyres. As a
minimum this must include that wheels and tyres, awaiting fitment, must be stored under cover. Each
Group Company must define where and how wheels and tyres will be stored. This must include the
segregation of wheels ready for fitment and those awaiting attention. Where appropriate, this will also
include the segregation of wheel rims and tyres, as well as fully built wheel assemblies and matched pairs.
3.0 Wheel Rim Inspection – Prior to Tyre Fitment.
Each Group Company must ensure they have a written policy that covers the inspection of wheel rims prior
to tyre fitment. This must cover all defined standards of cleanliness, wear, damage, corrosion and other
inspection wear tolerances.
Where steel wheels are painted, the manufacturers finish is preferred but in all cases NO MORE THAN
ONE THIN COAT OF APPROPRIATE PAINT should be applied for maintaining appearance and resisting
corrosion.
Only those wheel rims that have passed the inspection criteria are permitted to progress to the tyre fitting
stage. Those which do not pass the inspection criteria must be quarantined for disposal.
4.0 Inspection and Fitment of Tyres to Wheel Rims
All personnel responsible for fitting tyres to wheel rims must be specifically trained and competent to carry
out the task, including specific the inspection of tyres, prior to fitment.
Where Group Companies are responsible for fitting tyres they must ensure all necessary equipment to
ensure tyres are fitted safely is provided and maintained. This equipment must be provided by Group
Companies and used only by those responsible for fitting the tyre.
Where Group Companies fit their own tyres they must have, in place, a documented process for the
control of fitting tyres to wheel rims correctly and safely, including an inventory of equipment necessary to
undertake this task. If this equipment needs regular inspection or testing, this must also be defined.
Only those tyres that have passed the required inspection criteria are permitted to progress to the tyre fitting
stage. Those which do not pass the inspection criteria must be quarantined for disposal.
4.1 Inflation of Tyres
Each Group Company is responsible for defining the appropriate tyre pressures for each vehicle type, and
where required, each tyre position.
All necessary equipment to ensure tyres are inflated safely must be provided and used.
