Of course! I’ll get the highest score of all his students (foreshadowing). I’ll get the highest score even
though I’m failing at my Four-Star book, I thought to myself. After knowing the full content of the
exam, I greatly worried how I was going to handle this with existing 8th grade pressure. I felt like I
was going to die from the pressure that was stomping on my head (personification and hyperbole).
Now, I have to deal with two things at once. Great.
I went back to the Conservatory of Music website for online listening practices. However, the
practices seemed harder than usual, and I had barely practiced the Repertoire and Etude pieces in a
month. I was not at all ready for this exam and Mr. Williams would notice that my main pieces of
music were not properly prepared. I also observed that I wasn’t meeting my teacher’s expectations
to the fullest, and I needed to practice more.
It was the end of November now, and I was almost ready for the exam to come my way. However,
that first week of December was a tough week at school. I was not ready for my three semester
exams this year. Geometry and Physical Science were pretty easy to tackle. My biggest fear for
semester exams was the Spanish semester exam. Spanish was a completely new language for me, so
I wasn’t sure I’d do well. Semester exams were coming up in mid-December and my piano exam was
December 4th, so I had to keep my mind bouncing back and forth from music to academics to
balance out the amount of practicing and studying.
After all the hard work and practicing, I finally had to prove the diligence of my practice through my
performances. The drive to Cincinnati that day seemed like forever (hyperbole), but we eventually
reached the location in time. When we got to the registration desk, the old man sitting there signed
me in and told me to go sit in the lobby.
My arms and legs were shaking rapidly in nervousness. I tried to take many deep breaths, but they
didn’t work for me. Many things were running through my mind while I was impatiently waiting in
the lobby. Even the peaceful sound of the water fountain (imagery) behind me couldn’t calm me
down. My mom, dad, and even my sister tried to motivate me, but it was useless.
Finally, it was time to go into the examination room. I had a smile on my face, but the inside of my
soul was trembling of fear. The judge came out and welcomed me with a smile. She seemed very
nice but strict at the same time. I was getting super nervous and because of this nervousness, I didn’t
have the energy to talk.
The woman took me into the examination room where the judge scored me on my playing. She told
me to play technical first, so I did. I believed that my performance was better than my practices in
class. My Repertoire and Etude pieces turned out to be well-played. After I was finished playing, the
judge told me to wait so she could write down comments.
When we came out of the examination room, I realized I still had goosebumps on my arms and the
judge informed us that I would receive my score within two to four weeks. I was very anxious to
know my score right then, but the guidelines said to be patient.
Two weeks passed, and I asked my dad if he got any word for my results. The weeks went by, yet I
still didn’t get my score back; it concerned us significantly. Mr. Williams was also really confused as
to why I still hadn’t gotten my results. Finally, I got my results after two months of waiting. One day
in February, when I came back from school, I saw my mom and dad smiling at me in a weird way. I
was completely confused about why they were smiling at me. They handed me a piece of chocolate.
“What is this for?” I asked.
“You got a… 88%! Congratulations, you have earned a First-Class Honors Position!”
I was left with my mouth wide open. I took the result paper from my dad and looked at the
comments the judge gave me. I didn’t make as many mistakes as I thought I did. I was so excited, I
texted Mr. Williams that I got a First-Class Honors. He texted me back saying that he knew that my
hard work would pay off well. He also said that I had received the highest score of all his students.
That day was the best day of my life, and that day will be marked forever in my diary of life.
