When the idea of Sunday School was
first conceived, Bible teaching was not
included in the curriculum. William
Fox, a Baptist deacon, introduced the
idea of including Bible teaching along
with the academics that were being
taught. The King James Bible was the
textbook that was used for learning to
read, and many children also learned
to write by copying passages from the
Scriptures.
Sunday Schools soon spread to America,
and by the mid-19th century, several
hundred Sunday Schools had started
in the United States. Eventually biblical
instruction was emphasized over reading,
