4:6), because “If God be for us, who can be
against us?” (Rom. 8:31).
But just as in Old Testament times, God will
not be “for us” and defend His disobedient
child unless there’s repentance and a
forsaking of sin in his or her life. Although
God sometimes allows his obedient children
to suffer at the hands of their enemies for His
ultimate glory and purposes, disobedience
and rebellion toward God are primarily the
reasons for suffering and defeat in the life of
a child of God even in these New Testament
times (See Gal. 6:7-8 & Heb. 12:5-11). In
verses 25 through 27, David lists some of the
conditions for God’s blessings and victories
in a believer’s life.
As we look around at the Christ-rejecting
and unthankful world in which we live, we,
too, often agonize like David: “Oh that men
