3 . No longer human
Genre: fiction novel
Age range:16+
Heartless is a book by Marissa Meyer and it retells the story of Alice in Wonderland
from the point of view of the villain, the Queen of Hearts. The story gives the Queen
a backstory that explains how she turned out to be evil. I’ve always despised Queen
of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, but this story absolutely altered my perception
towards her and I learnt that certain mistakes can completely transform someone’s
life.
4 . The Maze Runner
Genre: Science fiction
Age range:14+
“The Maze Runner” tells the story of a man named Thomas who wakes up in a strange
maze with no recollection of anything. He finds other boys who are also trapped
there. The story then follows the boys and their strategies and attempts to flee from
the maze. Unfortunately, the patterns of the maze alter each night, and is filled with
deadly species that need to be avoided at all costs. Reading about the boys’ hardships
with each step in the maze made me connect with the characters and recognize how
fortunate I am not to have to face such adversity.
5 . The Alchemist
Genre: Fantasy fiction
Age range:13+
The story circles around a young boy named Santiago who has chosen to live his life
as a shepherd. But eventually, he becomes discontent with his dull life as he has to
take care of the sheep and yearns. He begins to get omens and dreams to look for a
fortune. He sets off towards Egypt to fulfill his destiny. This book has taught me to
never give up on what I truly want to be, and that doing what you enjoy is the most
essential aspect of life.
