As one piece of 3 strand rope will provide enough strands to
make 3 grommets, deck quoits are usually made up as sets of 3.
If you have single and double blocks to strop, always cut the rope
long enough to make the biggest strop. When making a pair of
beckets, make 3 and use the best pair.
MATERIALS For a set of 3 quoits: 3m of 18mm or 24mm diam 3
strand rope, natural if possible
For a pair of chest beckets: 3m of 14mm or 16mm
diam 3 strand hemp or manila if possible
8m fine tarred marline to worm the rope
The same or larger to make the Turk’s heads
2 pieces of approx 75mm x 150mm leather
For block strops: 1 piece of 3 strand rope 3 times the
circumference of the strop plus about 300mm

For Chest beckets: Worming
Turk’s heads of choice: pages 28, 66, 76, 77, 78, 79
METHOD A
Having worked out how much
rope is required, form a circle in
the middle of the rope with the
ends overlapping. Mark both
parts of the rope at this cross over
point. Now gently unlay one
strand from the rope, taking
great care to keep as much of the
twist, kink and lay in the strand
as possible. It helps to hold the
rope up and let the strand that is Forming a grommet
being unlaid hang down. When
you have the strand free, form a one end of the strand round
circle with the marks of the cross itself, starting to re-form the
over side by side. Now gently lay structure of the original rope. As
