items were on the drop down boot lid. Two huge milk churns
covered with travel rugs, this was the fuel to get us home.
Somehow Gordon had eventually ‘found’ sufficient petrol
coupons to cover the whole journey to Huish Champflower, just
outside Wiveliscombe and not far from Taunton.
It was a long way but well worth the effort, the farm was
mainly dairy cattle that produced the most amazing ‘clotted
cream’.
The dairy was located just across the yard from the farmhouse
kitchen and that being at the rear of the huge double fronted,
'mud and stud' and
thatched farmhouse. No
sooner had the morning
house allocation of fresh
milk passed over the
cooler than several
gallons were poured into
a large open dish type
vessel very much like a
very big wok. This sat on
a gas ring that provided
the gentle heat to
evaporate the milk to
provide the soft yellow
cream for our tea. This
process took several
hours but was religiously
undertaken everyday
during our holiday stay.
