On the occasion of this ‘first’ holiday after the war the only
other child was Gordon and Sybil’s son Alan a year or so younger
than myself. “Richard” Alan, of course.
We did spend a further holiday on the farm at a later time
when Alan was encumbered by his younger brother “Richard”
Ian and I with my sister Jane.
In fact Ruth and I visited the farm while on our honeymoon
in 1965. It was eighteen years since my first visit but Aunt Sybil’s
parents still lived in the ‘Big’ house and the whole farm had
hardly changed at all.

ROYAL VISIT TO HARROGATE
One bright event occurred around this time when HRH the
Princess Elizabeth paid an official visit to Harrogate. Gordon’s
smaller shop in Parliament Street was on a corner site and had a
first floor balcony. Our two families all crammed onto this to see
the Royal open topped car procession proceed slowly up the hill
past our vigorously waving flags.
