Joe and Brian begin work on the horses’
manes and tails.
“Now just you chaps stand still for a few
minutes,”says Joe with a wobbly voice..he is
standing on a tall box so that he can reach the
very top of the horse’s neck. “If I fall off this
box..,” he says very shakily..”I will have to
begin all over again.”
Joe is plaiting the long hair into a very tidy
pattern.
Long white ribbons weave in and out with
the hair and small flaggy things called doddles
are placed out along the backs of the horses’
necks.
While Joe is busy with the front of the
horses ..Brian is working hard with the tails..
more white ribbon and tight plaits here too, until
the two friends look a real picture!
“Collars next chaps,” says Joe...with
authority and as Joe speaks, each horse lowers
his head in turn to have the shiny heavy collars
put over their ears and eyes.
The collars are then twizzled round so that
the soft straw inside fits snuggly on their
shoulders.
