All through that winter we called to watch the progress as
“our” boat began to take shape.
The inside ribs were all oak and her hull was larch
planking. Reg. had changed the original design just a little to
give us accommodation for three to sleep and a small galley
just under the full headroom coach-roof.
“Peregrine”, just 21 feet in length and gaff cutter in rig,
had been designed by John Leather who was well known
for producing traditional style shallow draught craft
suited to England’s East Coast with its many creeks and
estuaries.
A small traditional single cylinder petrol engine
provided the power to travel up and down river to the sea
or close manoeuvring when leaving and arriving at our
moorings.
Another club member bought “Navita” from us and in
1969 “Peregrine” took her proud place on a mooring at
the Witham Sailing Club.
We had used what remained of our savings and invested in
something alive and of great beauty.
We were delighted to both own the boat and have given Reg.
the chance he wanted, to build his very last boat, a design he had
cherished for so many years.
