other leading tyre producers had to make do with
manufacturing fabric banded radial tyres which were not
really in the same league.
Back to the ‘F151’; the Firestone tyre designers decreed
that tyre pressure was critical to maintain good traction and I
quickly found myself making regular service calls to farmers
and tractor dealers all around my area who were complaining
that the tyres on their new tractors would not pull!
Many of these problems were where tractors had been
delivered on lorries from the factory with increased tyre
pressures to help keep them stable while travelling. The
pressures had not been reduced sufficiently afterwards.
Additionally, we had a problem with one make of tractor
where older type rear wheel rims had been used without
anyone at the tractor factory connecting the fact that these
new tyres had to be used on wheel rim with a serrated edge.
These serrations connected to similar markings on the tyre
bead where it touched the rim to give the best possible grip.
Massey Ferguson fitted with F151 tyres.
