They all agreed to accept the tyres provided we could get
            them fitted in sufficient time for them to practice before the
            ploughing competition season began.
               For two weeks in the late spring this took priority over
            anything else on my ‘patch’. Dates were confirmed for the
            actual fitting and Firestone service engineers booked with the
            factory to complete the actual job.
               The ploughmen were, Gerry Dickinson from Leverton near
            Boston, Tom Smith from Martin near Lincoln, and Ron Knight
            from Great Casterton who also told us of his friend and close
            neighbour from North Luffenham in Rutland (just out of our
            area) who was also a finalist.
               All were full of enthusiasm for the ‘deal’ for new front and
            rear tyres which even in the 1960’s amounted to several
            hundred pounds.
