(Picture previous page, 1960’s Hillman Minx. Many cars
like this were bought by “the Garage” from car auctions after
being used by travelling salemen. They had huge mileages!)

               RESPECT
Even when working for the newspaper I had been taught to
respect the client and always give good value for money.
Ensure the client appreciated and benefited from the fact that
although you were relieving him of his money, it was for his
own good. “Herby” echoed these principals.
Back at West Street, there was the resident salesman. Both
he and the West Street mechanic definitely resented my
            intrusion.
“The salesman” was a clean shaven, Pickwickian character
of rotund proportions with only a little hair on his head. He
chain smoked and always wore a knitted waistcoat under his
suit. Needless to say the waistcoat was punctured with
countless cigarette burns and these were constantly expanding
under such severe pressure from his enlarged midriff. His suit
            jacket would never fasten.
