I was truly enthusiastic about these motors and father,
mother and the two children were given the whole “tour”.
Unbeknown to me, the father was sales manager for a very
large fertilizer manufacturer within the County. He returned
with William some days later and ordered a comprehensive
fleet of cars!
I never did see any commission on that sale but was
consequently sent off to the Factory again.
This time, much to the resident salesman’s annoyance; on a
Commercial Vehicle sales course.
The “salesman” was supposed to be the truck salesman too.
Perhaps that is why he managed to get away with “that
waistcoat” for so long.
FLEET CARS
William continued pursuing his interest in second hand car
sales and big profits by bidding for large numbers of ex fleet
cars.
These varied hugely in condition obviously, but one thing
was always the same; a huge mileage on the speedometer.
Many of the older established garage proprietors in the
area simply took a small commission on these bid price fleet
cars. They simply washed the cars quickly and drove them
down to London dealers in large numbers in the middle of the
night.
This method of transportation saved them the cost of road
tax and any other inconvenient legal complications.
William would not have any of this, he wanted the most
profit he could possibly squeeze from these vehicles.
In all honesty I could not sell these second-hand cars
that had been ‘got at’. From then on, I would only sell vehicles
that I knew Herbert or I had traded in.
