Today though he played the fool and as vehicles slowed he moved forward from us and
truly amused everyone by choosing different carriages to travel with, as the afternoon
progressed.
I remember he tired himself out on the particularly hilly parts of the route and was seen
actually riding in someone else’s carriage by the very end of the afternoon.
Dinan’s very first public ‘outing’ had been with the driving society a few years before when
we had all met at Grimsthorpe Castle in the southern part of the County.
I think it was the castle’s first day of their season open to the public and the Driving Society
were an additional attraction. Jupiter’s mother Juno was our horse for that day pulling a
lovely green two wheel Ralli Cart. Dinan behaved impeccably.
Now to return to the main part of our story title, four years or so have passed during which
time we encountered significant change in fortune and move to Northcote. We were in
need of some harness parts and Sue had kindly offered to sell us some of her’s second
hand.
Our family transport and in fact Ruth’s work car was now an elderly Citroen Dyane, the
mechanics were similar to the famous 2cv with a little more up rated twin cylinder air
cooled motor and slightly larger body with estate car lift up rear door.
Citroen Dyane picture from the internet, our car was exactly the same in style and colour.
THE VISIT TO SUE
We duly arrived one afternoon at Sue’s house in the country just outside Grantham to find
her sporting a rotten cold and sore throat.
Once comfortably installed in her huge country kitchen against her ever warm ‘Aga’ she
offered us refreshment. ‘Coffee or something stronger’ was on offer.
Having driven some distance and the return journey ahead, we chose coffee, Sue
produced the largest cut glass tumbler I have ever seen and promptly filled it to the brim
with best Scotch Whisky.
Her certain cure for the sore throat and to take her mind off the cold.
