Skip Lorry Safe Operation
A skip lorry must not be operated unless you
are fully conversant with the vehicles safe
operation and its controls.
To obtain maximum efficiency, and to
produce good fuel economy, the vehicle
must always be driven in the green band on
the rev counter.
The loading and unloading of containers
could be a very dangerous manoeuvre,
unless a great deal of care is taken during
this procedure. There is a high risk of damage to the vehicle and its equipment, property
and the health and safety of the driver and public unless the following procedures are carried
out.
You must not operate a skip lorry unless you are fully conversant with the vehicles
controls and you have been formally trained with a Wayside certificate of
competence.
Travelling
• The vehicle must be stationary before operating the PTO unit.
• When travelling without a container, always securely locate the lift chains preferably on
hooks on the lift arms.
• Always be aware of the travelling height of the vehicle (especially if carrying more than
one container as skips must not be higher than the arms of your vehicle when they are
in the fully forward position and the arms fully closed)
• Always ensure that the lift arms are forward, down and the arms are fully closed.
• Before setting off with a loaded container, ensure that it is safely placed
relative to the container stops. If these are adjustable move them to
suit.
• If travelling with a container, ensure that the chains are properly
attached to the container.
• Ensure that there are no objects that could fall from the container
before travelling on the highway.
• Ensure a safe speed is maintained and particular care is taken at
roundabouts, as the container could move.
• Use bump stops where fitted to prevent the skip moving forward and contacting the
headboard.
• Empty skips should be transported double chained where possible for security. However,
the stack of skips must not be higher than the arms of your vehicle when they are in the
fully forward position and the arms fully closed.
• When transporting a container full of waste, the container must always be sheeted.
• Only one fully loaded container to be transported, doubling up is not permitted as this
could be deemed illegal.
