Skip exchange example:
If you need to swap skips over unload the skips into a safe and designated area and
complete the swap on the ground.
• Arrive on Site (Ensure safe to load/un-load)
• Unload bins to ground
• Lift out the full skip back onto the lorry body
This method of exchange is only possible if the skips are of the same design. Beware of
mis-shaped skips (report to your Operations Manager) as this may result in the skip getting
wedged inside the bottom skip. If this happens both skips must be returned to the AMS Ltd
yard where they can be separated safely.
You must notify your Operations Manager that this has occurred who can advise best of
which site to return to and how to proceed. On arrival to the AMS Ltd site please advise
the Operations Manager of the issue and await a safe area to park in. You can then agree
the safe way to proceed to separate the skips this might be with machine intervention. If
this is the case you must unload the skips from the vehicle body and wait in the cab until
the skips are safely separated.
Things to remember
• Never allow another driver, customer or member of the public to operate the controls or
climb onto the vehicle to assist with chains.
• STOP if anyone enters the working area of the vehicle or you lose sight of them.
Nobody HELPS with chains.
• If you have to climb onto the body of the vehicle then please ensure that you use your
hard hat with chin strap and use three points of contact at all times when using the access
ladders. At no point should you jump down from the vehicle body.
• Never walk along the ram guards on the side of the loader or put your feet
or hands between them and the vehicle body.
• Before placing or lifting the container ensure that the vehicle is level. If not
level, use jack legs to achieve this. Check that the area is clear of people
and that there are no overhead obstructions.
• Check the locking lugs are secured on the lifting lugs.
• If the vehicle is fitted with safety lock tip hooks, ensure the safety hooks
are free and operating properly.
• Do not twist chains in order to reduce the effective chain length. Dual keep plates or
dual chains are the best alternative.
• When the container is lifted, ensure that the container and its contents are level.
• Do not, or let anyone else under any circumstances, stand or pass beneath a suspended
container.
• Do not block the rear jacks to obtain extra height.
• Keep the rear wheels in contact with the ground at all times. If the rear wheels are off the
ground, the handbrake will be inoperative and the vehicle could roll forwards or
backwards without warning.
• “Fast lower” should only be used when placing empty containers.
