Fire Extinguishers
Fired Containers
If waste is tipped from a container that appears to be smouldering or on fire you must
firstly inform the site manager/foreman. This must be extinguished and separated from
the other waste on site to stop it from spreading.
Possible Fire Scenarios
The following is a list of instances that are most likely to cause problems in Transfer
Stations :-
A. A load arrives on site which is visibly on fire
• The load must tipped in an area away from the normal tipping area (the middle of
the yard is advisable) or into a designated area and away from any fuels,
machinery, site personnel or visitors.
• During tipping, fire hoses and fire extinguishers must be ready to spray the load
• Once tipped, the vehicle must be moved to a safe distance from the fire.
• The load must be thoroughly soaked and spread out using the grab loader to
ensure the fire is fully extinguished. Fire extinguishers must be at hand to
extinguish any materials that cannot be extinguished with water.
• The site Manager/foreman must attend the load to assess whether the fire is fully
extinguished and to what extent the load has cooled.
• The load may only join the waste stream after it is fully cooled.
