• If the load needs further cooling, it is recommended that it be reloaded into another
container and left outside for further watering.
• If the fire is or becomes too large to control, you must call the Fire Brigade on
telephone number 999 and ask them to attend the fire. Anyone in direct danger
from the fire must be evacuated from site and assembled outside the premises in
a safe area.
B. A container arrives on site which has a burnt appearance on the outside
• The easiest way to detect if the container is a light on the inside is to place your
hand near to the outside of the burnt area to feel if there is any heat radiating from
the container.
• If there is heat, then you must follow the above procedure A.
• Should you feel no heat but are unsure, you should also follow procedure A above.
• If there is no heat and you are sure that there is no risk, you must still tip the load
in the waste reception building but away from the main waste pile, just in case
there is evidence of fire. This way you are able to treat any fire without risking the
fire spreading.
• If the load is found to be completely safe, the load can join the main waste stream.
Sometimes containers have burnt sides from previous fires.
C. A load arrives on site which is not visibly on fire, but once tipped is found to be
alight
The fire needs to be assessed to determine whether it can be moved with the site
machinery to a safe area away from all other waste. If so, the load must be moved to
a point where nobody is put in danger and there is no chance of the fire spreading.
Fire procedure A should then be followed to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
• If the fire is too dangerous to move, the load and surrounding area must be
sprayed with water to extinguish any flames to ensure the fire does not spread.
• Whilst this is taking place, if it is safe to do so, the waste in question must be
moved using the grab loader, away from the main waste pile, to help prevent any
further spread of fire.
• Once the load has been moved to a safer area, Fire procedure A must be followed
to ensure that the fire is fully extinguished.
D. The main waste storage area is found to be on fire.
• The fire must be assessed to consider if it can be controlled safely.
• If it cannot be controlled, the Fire Brigade must be called and everyone must be
evacuated from site to the fire assembly point. The site manager must check and
ensure that everyone is clear from site.
• Upon arrival, the Fire Brigade will take full control of the situation and their
commands must be adhered to.
• If the fire can be controlled, it must be carried out with the up most caution.
• If at any time the fire becomes too strong to handle, point ii must be followed and
the Fire Brigade called.
