Interaction between Pedestrians and Plant
If a pedestrian ever enters a striking zone around your machinery, you must power down
immediately and wait for them to move out of your zone.
A striking zone is the distance at which your machinery can fully extend to.
The photo below shows two excavators operating with the pedestrian in the high-vis jacket
within their striking zone. In this situation both operatives should power down their machine
and wait for the pedestrian to be clear.
Two-Way radios should also be used by machine operators and banksman on-site so that
warnings can be issued when pedestrians are spotted or machines need to pass within the
strike zone.
• The interaction between machinery and pedestrians can be fatal.
• Report broken or missing radios to the Operations Manager immediately.
In 2023 30% of workplace fatalities in Great Britain were a result of pedestrian contact with
moving machinery do not let this be one of our team.
