25.3 Fire Emergency Procedures
In the event of a Fire, the following action is to be taken:
Action to be taken on discovering a Fire:
• Raise the alarm by shouting “ FIRE FIRE FIRE” to warn other employees
• Operate the nearest fire alarm and use the break glass call points to sound the alarm
at your exit point
• Dial “999”, ask for the Fire Brigade and provide the operator with your name, telephone
number and the postal address.
• If persons are trapped make this clear in the initial message.
• Fight the fire only if you have been trained and it is safe for you to do so.
• Evacuate the building and assemble at the designated assembly point
o Report to the person in charge
o Stay at the assembly point until directed otherwise
Action to be taken by the Managing Director / Manager or Person Present:
• Ensure that the alarm has been raised
• Ensure that all staff are evacuated to the assembly point
• Ensure that any injured staff are evacuated to the assembly point
• Ensure that a roll call is being taken.
• Brief the Senior Fire Officer on arrival of the Fire Appliance and advise whether or not
all personnel are accounted for.
On hearing the fire alarm raised:
• Evacuate the building using the nearest exit and assemble at the designated assembly
point
o Report to the person in charge
o Stay at the assembly point until directed otherwise
• If it is safe to do so, close all windows and doors and isolate power supplies if time
permits on evacuation (doors are not to be locked).
All employees are to familiarise themselves with the fire / emergency procedure for raising the
alarm and / or summoning help in their particular work place. Especially the position of the fire
alarm call point, fire extinguishers, escape route, emergency exits and muster points.
25.4 Fire Training.
• All staff will receive basic fire safety training in the use of and correct type of fire
extinguishers in order to assist with the safe evacuation from the building or work site
in the event of an emergency.
• Fire evacuation exercises will also be carried out at least six monthly and recorded.
• A record of the training received will be entered into the fire building register.
