• When handling HFL, ensure that appropriate fire fighting equipment is available close
by and that persons in the area understand how to use it.
30 Construction Safety
• The Company recognises that some elements of its undertaking are associated with
the Construction Industry and as such may be subject to Construction (Design &
Management) Regulations (CDM).
• In particular, when appointed by the Client as the Principal Contractor under CDM
Regulations, the Company will undertake to fulfil all necessary duties as required.
Specifically, this will include the preparation of site specific construction phase health
& safety plans and the provision of all necessary security arrangements to prevent
access by un-authorised persons and co-operate with the CDM Coordinator.
• As a part of our tender process the client is required to issue the company with pre
construction phase documentation. The Company, in return, will carry out a site
inspection and amalgamate any additional risks, in association of its working practices,
and assess the risks. Risk assessments and method statements will form a part of
continuing safety management, throughout our part of a project and site work
participation. A review of the risk assessments will be carried out with the client, CDM
coordinator and any others involved in the working process by nature of site meetings,
as pre-arranged per project, and contact through email and telephone. Where required
meetings and communications will be recorded and distributed accordingly.
• Where the Company carries out design works it will fulfil its responsibility by assessing
associated risks in relation to the design, to ensure it eradicates the risk or minimises
it to an acceptable level by nature of introduction, build and ongoing maintenance.
• Where works undertaken require notification under the CDM Regulations, these will be
notified to the Health and Safety Executive by the respective Planning Supervisor for
the works.
• Similarly, when engaged as contractors in any construction project, the Company will
undertake to comply with all safety rules imposed by the Principal Contractor and
provide all necessary information for the project health & safety file.
• All employees participating in CDM projects will receive an induction by the Company
or its appointed persons in addition to a full briefing on skill requirements, as relevant.
• The company will ensure that all tooling and machinery, which it utilises, on a CDM
project is fit for purpose and that employees are appropriately trained for its use.
• Where required the Company will provide additional training to meet with the project
requirements.
• The Company will also comply with other relevant regulations and ACOP’s pertaining
to construction.
• If the construction works is not Notifiable, then the company will follow the guidelines
of the CDM Regulations in principle.
• The Company will ensure that appropriate welfare facilities are provided on site by
nature of risk assessment at the pre-construction phase or general consultation with a
client. This will include a place of rest with seating, tables, heating, drying facilities,
shower, hot and cold water and where needed food prep and cooking area. Toilets will
be made available with hand wash facilities, separate from food prep areas. Employees
will be made aware of these facilities as a part of the site induction.
• All employees will be issued with suitable and sufficient PPE. Eye protection, gloves
(as specified), hard hat, hi-vis jackets and safety boots is a minimum requirement on
all construction sites.
• All safety signs and notices are to be complied with by employees and others on site.
