Congratulations to the Race four fleet of 19
competitors for their participation in another
successful day of classic yacht racing. In particular the
back marker performance by Acrospire III to lead the 24th June 2022
fleet home has to be the notable feature of this race.

th
Race 4. 19 June
Another big day of Classic Yacht racing on
Port Phillip.
With next to no wind and sea fog from
Portarlington to Werribee being reported on
Sunday morning, who would have thought race
4 would be another one of their days of brilliant
winter series classic yacht racing.

are forever increasing. Race
4 saw the return to the classic yacht racing scene by Bungoona and
Tandanya. Their return put our fleet up to 22. On the day we had a fleet of
19 starters.
Special effort by Tandanya
To make the Race 4 start line
Tandanya put in a special
Tandanya,
West Channel effort to voyage back to
RYCV from her Queenscliff
th
summer haunts on 14 June. Tandanya left
QCYC at 6.10 am, it was a bit wintry but a
reasonable breeze was blowing and that gave Photo Jane Williamson
Tandanya time to catch the incoming West channel RYCV Committee boat on station for race 4 finish

tide and arrive at Royals about 2.10 pm.
A first for RYCV and the classics
One other Race 4 first was to have RYCV conducting this pursuit start race in open waters
adjacent to Beaconsfield Parade, unlike previous races, that saw the waters off the RYCV
marina and Hobsons Bay being used.
Where for the start line.
After some wind strength and direction analysis by the RYCV race committee the thinking was
how to give boats a light wind challenge to the windward mark. After an analysis of the steam
from various on shore industrial chimneys down went the floating pin end mark. Not so fast
here. A recall drop was needed. The inflatable mark wouldn’t stand upright, more lead was
needed to sort this detail out. The committee boat pick was dropped, up when the signalling
flags for the course flags and out went the race starting on schedule call on channel 72.
