                                 Creating Your Br and

Now that you have a handle on your packaging and have found a
designer, you can pull together both parts to form your brand. To
do this, consider your product's message. Your packaging and logo
needs to reflect this "message."

For example, if your product is an upscale, sophisticated new
kitchen utensil, the packaging needs to promote that same feeling.
If you have a baby product, you will want your packaging to look
soft and reassuring, and have a "sweet" feeling to it (through the use
of specific colors and fonts). If you are trying to appeal to athletic
teenaged boys, you will need a strong, bold message.

To give your designer some direction, check out how certain
colors and fonts make you feel. You will begin to notice similar
fonts used on juvenile products and you can spot scripty fonts on
packaging trying to convey some sort of formality. (More on this
in Step 8.) After you have figured out your demographic and your
message, discuss these goals with your graphic artist. They'll be a
great starting point for him. You can even list certain words you'd
associate with your product. Examples of great descriptive words
are: whimsical, upscale, feminine, fun, sophisticated, premium,
pure, organic, high-end, clean, crisp, bright , masculine, bargain,
retro, and edgy.

                                             UPCs

I'll mention UPCs (Universal Product Codes) while we're talking
about packaging, because you need to be sure you leave space
somewhere on your label, tags, or packaging for it. UPCs are the
distinctive barcodes you see on virtually every product. They can
be scanned by cash registers. They are uniquely numbered so that
each company has its own seven-digit identification number and
then each product the company sells has other digits added to the
seven for a unique product code.

Fees to register for your company's unique UPC number range
from $150 to $ 1 , 500, depending on the number of items you plan
