Step 8. Make the Most of Your Marketing Efforts 1 57

 • Provide her with all your marketing materials so she can pre
pare a comprehensive press release and send out your materials
to media outlets immediately. Give her your electronic images
(logos, artwork, photos), your postcards, fliers, brochures , pric
ing lists, and anything else that might be useful.

 • Find out exactly what is included in the monthly fee. Some pub
licists bill clients like law firms. They charge you for every phone
call made on your behalf, every page they fax for you, every postal
charge , etc. See what you can get included in your monthly fee.
It's tough to get a bill full of miscellaneous items at the end of a
month, especially if no coverage has materialized yet.

 • Set goals together to be sure you want the same end result and
that no one is duplicating efforts. Work with a publicist that
understands and shares your vision. Meet monthly to review the
status on those goals and make new ones.

 • Ask her how you can help her efforts.
 • Ask to be included in some meetings with media contacts if

    possible.

Publicists offer a great service, but it comes at a cost. Weigh your
options and if you can't afford it now, consider it again later once
you've got more cash. Or maybe you can barter this service.

The first thing you need to generate publicity, whether you do it
yourself or use a professional, is a formal press release. A press
release is a written statement about your company and product,
usually promoting something specific with a "hook," something that
grabs the reader's attention. Press releases follow a specific format
and are usually one page, double-spaced documents. You can put
press releases in your press kit or send them to buyers via e-mail.
You can also find services that will deliver your press release to a

specific industry. Check out www.prweb.com. which offers different

levels of services at reasonable prices.
